How Can You Extend Love to A Total Stranger Today?
"Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle."
As I was getting into bed Sunday night after an amazing weekend with Jenna in Ojai, I read some tragic news - that director Tony Scott had passed away. I am a HUGE movie fan and his film Top Gun is one of the all time greats!
When I read on and found out that Tony took his own life, I was in total shock. This is a guy who just produced Prometheus, has three active projects and dozens in development, including a sequel to Top Gun. And, I thought to myself, “Man - you just NEVER know what someone is going through.”
As I search my feelings in reaction to this news, I can only say that this moment, among many others that happen everyday on this planet, is yet another reminder of how precious life is and how necessary Love is.
We have no idea how a kind word, a smile or a small act of service can change the course of someone’s life. How taking part of our day and showing interest in the well-being of another could affect their life.
A few years ago a friend of mine took his own life, and it was a shock to all of us close to him.
And what I learned through it all was that in a world where there is a belief in SO much separation of “us” and “them” - the truth is that there is only “us”. And what we need far more than anything else to live is - LOVE.
Tony Robbins reminds us that, “LOVE is the oxygen of the soul.” And that no matter how much outward success we have in our lives, when we lack LOVE - we simply LACK. And those who have LOVE have the most precious gift that Life can give us.
And what is so cool is that none of us have to wait another moment to extend Love to someone. We tend to think that the most important acts in Life are grand gestures and epic outcomes, but truly it is the small unseen acts that matter most. A simple smile or hug has the power to change someone’s life. To show empathy and interest towards another human being may be the act of Grace that prevents events like this from happening.
Now, I’m not trying to over simplify this issue. We never truly know what someone is going through. I know in my own life that there were times when I felt so low, I had thoughts about taking my own life. I never acted on them, but those thoughts did come. And it was being embraced by others, Loved by others - when I couldn’t Love myself, that made the difference. And I include in this blog, you.
The TDL readers kept me going through some of my toughest times.
How can you extend Love to a total stranger today? Maybe it’s paying the toll of the person behind you, or buying someone’s Starbucks, or calling up an old friend that you haven’t spoken to in a while and genuinely asking how they are doing, or perhaps it’s simply smiling at a stranger. What small act of Love can you extend today and every day forward?
Tony is a symbol for so many - and we can pull the silver lining out of tragedy when we ourselves are moved to extend Love and do what we can to let others know they are not alone.

Rest in peace Tony - and thank you for your amazing contributions to our world."
